Pucker Up!

This summer is all about vibrant color and I am loving all the fun lip shades.  I would by no means consider myself a beauty expert, but have tried a few shades over the last few years in search of those that work with fair skin. This is a difficult feat. #whitegirlproblems !!! I have finally found a few tried and true shades that are amazing quality and I don’t necessarily feel the need to venture out and try anything else at this time.  Let’s count down the top 5…

NARS in Heatwave, Laura Geller in Madison Ave, Too Faced in Nude Beach , YSL in Vibrant Pink

And for the win…

Untitled #34

Lately, I am loving all shades of purple; from the soft feminine lilacs to the more bold vibrant neons, to a rich deep classic purple.  Because I tend to stay neutral with clothing, my toes are becoming my “fun accessory,” because they can be concealed for work.  I am also starting to thinking of incorporating some purple into my casa! 🙂

Spring/ Summer Makeup Capsule: Round 2

Alright so here we are, the details of my second makeup capsule.  This will run from 3/15 to 10/15 and will consist of 15 pieces and a $200 budget .  Thus helps me to keep my beauty spending in check.  If I learned one lesson from my first time around, it is that white girls NEED bronzer.  Also, while I really liked some of my fall/ winter pieces, some are not necessary given the time of year.  I have 3 “levels” of makeup looks if you will.

Level One: This is my everyday look.  In my life this is for trips to target, travel days for work or running to my moms.  This simply includes primer, foundation, powder and Chapstick with light mascara.  Below is my inspiration photo.

image

Level Two:  This is for times where a little more is appropriate…aka work, lunch dates and church.  I build on level one but add bronzes for a sunny glow and a light shadow. Below is my inspiration photo.

image

Level Three: This is for special occasions where I intend and plan to spend more time primping.  I build on level two with a lip color or smokey eyes.  See my inspiration photo below.

So here we go with details. 4 brushes, 3 lip products, 1 eye shadow palette, mascara, powder, foundation, Bronzer, tanning lotion, spray Bronzer and primer.

New purchases include…

Tantalized Bronzer and self tanner.  I researched these in depth.  You know us white girls need some help in the tanning department.  I bought these using a 20% off coupon at Ulta and using my Ulta points for an additional $17 off putting me at $34.35.

The tanning spray I also researched in depth.  This is from Victoria Secret.  I have some concerns I may need to replenish before 10/15, but we will see.  This totaled $15.76.

The sculpting brush by Tarte and the Too Faced lip gloss were purchased at Sephora at a grand total of $62.34 ( no coupons 😦 )

The foundation was a replenish from Dillard’s and is Este Lauder.  This totaled $31.13.  With this purchase I got a free gift, which I kept the eye shadow palette ( yay FREE) and gifted the remaining items.

In total, $143.55.  Over 25 % under budget.  If only I could the same for our house hunt!!!  I plan to be more diligent with updates and looks this time around and become a selfie taker.  I have mixed feelings about that, but we will see.

10 days to 29

And here are my CRAZY and WILD birthday plans.  Not really, all I want is Sprinkles cupcakes for breakfast, a day of netflix watching Reign ( which is awesome if you haven’t seen it yet ) and a date with my hubby at the Olive Garden without complaints.  The Olive Garden is at the top if our ” conflict” list, which may actually be a good thing, but bottom line….he HATES it, and I pretty much put it second in line to Disney World.  So plan to take advantage of this on my birthday.

*Leggings are H&M $30

*Boots are old Calvin Klein from DSW

New Years Eve

We will be keeping it low key this year, as hello! it is a workday.  Plans include a nice dinner, TBD by Mr. Holt, followed by locking ourselves inside for serious pj time and watching the ball drop.  More importantly, this is a time for reflection and new beginnings.  So more to come there.  However, I would never waste a day where it is appropriate to bring out the glitter so here is my outfit plan.

The tights are from Target ($8), beauty products from Sephora (I am breaking my capsule for this holiday only 😦 ) NARS shadow palette is $59 and lipstick is $22.  I want to keep my hair simple, since I have so much going on with the leather and sequins.  This is bordering too much, so need to keep it simple.  The leather top is $59 from top shop.  Skirt, clutch and shoes are old.  Looking forward to a fun night.

Simplicity: Make Up Capsule

Okay okay…I am jumping on this trend of capsules. A capsule (from how I understand it) is way to emphasize and define your style by focusing on less.  Less seems scary to me, but the idea of simplifying my life right now in any way sounds like a win.

I originally saw this concept on a few blogs I have come to follow, but I feel is best explained on  Caroline’s http://www.un-fancy.com .   But what I quickly picked up is that there are no defined rules… You make your own based on lifestyle.

My lifestyle really has 3 components – 1) WORK. I am employed by a large fortune 100 insurance company.  And if that does not make it conservative enough, I work in HR (aka the land of judgement).  2) HOME. This is defined for me as errands, cleaning, etc. and makes up about 80% of my non-work time. 3) FUN.  This encompasses everything social- date nights with Eric, brunches, time with my mom and sisters, etc.

Before, showing you my current make up collection, I will lead with this statement…

” Hi, my name is Mindy, and I am an over spender on makeup.”

image

Painful, right?

Now, the sad part is this collection was after I purged during our move, about 3 months ago. And it was a BIG purge. My current collection breaks down like this:

  • 2 primers
  • 4 concealers
  • 5 powders
  • 5 Bronzer/Blush used for contouring
  • 1 highlighter
  • 1 mascara
  • 3 eyeliners
  • 5 eye shadows
  • 7 lip products
  • 19 makeup brushes

So in total, 51 pieces.  And heaven only knows how much money I spent creating this collection, plus everything else I previously trashed…YIKES!

In the past, I would purchase based on impulse, packaging, sale, trends, etc.  Now that I will be limiting, I really needed to think about each piece and how I would use it.  Does it fit my lifestyle? Does it fit my budget? What is the shelf life? Many questions, so much research was done and here is what I decided…

My Fall/Winter makeup capsule will include a total of 15 items for a time frame of 6 months and I will allow myself a $200 max budget.

image

You will recognize some of the items, which I already owned and are still usable (not expired). 5 MAC brushes, Laura Gellar spackled primer, Laura Gellar drenched color lipgloss in milkshake, and the original NAKED palette.

I did my shopping in 2 hours and 3 stops: The breakdown…

1) ULTA.  $58.36 spent.  Purchased- Eco Tools blending brush, Burt’s Bees chap stick and IT Cosmetics My Sculpted Face palette. (Used a $3.50 off coupon)

image

2) SEPHORA. $28.17  spent. Purchased- NARS lipstick in heat wave.

image

3) DILLARD’S. $94.18 spent. Purchased – Dior Blackout mascara, Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation and pressed powder. ( foundation purchased during foundation event so the Double Wear foundation which is typically $37 I preordered for $27 and was given a week’s supply of samples as pictured below.  I pick it up on 09.27!)

My capsule’s total cost was $180.71 (including tax) and breaks down like this:

  • 1 primer
  • 1 foundation
  • 1 powder
  • 1 Bronzer/Blush palette
  • 1 eye palette
  • 1 mascara
  • 3 lip products
  • 6 make up brushes

I want to focus on a clean natural look with the option to play with a taupe smoky eye and nude lips for date night, or throw in a spicy red lip for lunches with the ladies.  I will report back throughout the six months, but am excited to have one more area of my life to practice simplicity.
